Abstract
n the Philippines there is a lot of crime, corruption and poverty. Therefore President Rodrigo Duterte introduced the ‘war on drugs’ to create security for the good citizens. However, state violence is used to reach this goal. The main research question is therefore: ‘What impact does Duterte’s ‘war on drugs’ have on the perceived safety of Filipino inhabitants and how does this impact the regime’s legitimacy?’ Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted in different barangays (neighborhoods). Also, an important part of information is obtained through small talk and the media. The differences in earlier experiences of violence have important consequences for security perceptions. These differences appear somehow paradoxical, because in the barangays that were safer in the past, the majority of the respondents feel less secure now. These respondents do generally not agree with the state violence. Conversely, the majority of the respondents in the barangays who experienced more crime in the past feel more secure now. These respondents generally agree with the state violence. One of the limitations is that this research only took place in one town. Also, this research does not include the degree of police intervention, interviews with (ex)-drug addicts and it does not address the lacked information provision. For future research it is interesting to include these topics too.
