Psychological well-being influenced by organizational structure? Research on the effect of organizational structure on consultant psychological well-being

Abstract
A poor psychological well-being of employees can significantly impact organizations and can even threaten their survival. The literature about the effect of organizational structure on psychological well-being can be elaborated on in further detail. In order to examine this effect, this study used De Sitter’s (1994) design parameters to describe organizational structure and Ryff’s (1989) operational definition of psychological well-being. A qualitative research approach was performed and data was gathered within a consultancy organization. Sixteen interviews were held with consultants from eight different teams and a document representing the organizational structure was analysed. The results reveal that an organizational structure, described by a separation of operational transformations, a separation between operational and regulatory transformations and a specialization in the operational transformation, most likely has a negative effect on psychological well-being. The design parameter describing the functional concentration of an organizational structure does not have a clear effect on psychological well-being. This study adds novelty to the literature, by providing insights in the effects of different organizational design parameters describing organizational structure, on the six dimensions of psychological well-being.
