Abstract
This paper examines the possible relation between linguistic viewpoints and narrative persuasion. A
literature review is conducted to investigate how linguistic viewpoints can be researched in relation
to narrative persuasion. Theories from several different academic disciplines on persuasion and
narrative persuasion are reviewed to gain better insights into the mechanisms that affect narrative
persuasion. The first chapter examines the workings of persuasion and the relevant related
concepts. Theories of persuasion and behaviour are compared to each other. The second chapter
focusses on theories of narrative persuasion. Concepts such as transportation and identification are
reviewed in relation to persuasion. The third chapter investigates how linguistic viewpoints relate to
these concepts. Linguistic viewpoints are discussed in relation to narrative persuasion and narrative
processing. The conclusion is that linguistic viewpoints are expected to affect narrative persuasion
by guiding the process of character identification. The implications of these findings are discussed, as
well as the possibilities for future research on linguistic viewpoints, identification, transportation,
and narrative persuasion.
