Abstract
This thesis answers the question of how the differences in the presidential transitions in the United States of American between 1989 and 2009 can be explained. Previous research has mostly focused on one presidential transition at a time, but comparative research has not yet been fully conducted. Based on scholarly research, I will use a comparative approach to analyze the U.S. presidential transitions from 1989 to 2009. This analysis is focused around three aspects of presidential transitions: presidential transitions teams, the transition of the executive office and the transition of the cabinet. The analyses of these three aspects demonstrate that there are several similarities and discrepancies between the four presidential transitions discussed here. In particular, this thesis concludes that including experienced Washington insiders is crucial for a successful transfer of power.
