Abstract
This thesis is focussed on ‘delegated performances’, a term coined by Claire Bishop for art performances which the artist has ‘delegated’ to others - usually a group of people who have no background in the (performance) arts and who have been selected for ‘belonging’ to a certain category based, for example, on: profession, gender or ethnicity. While most studies of this practice have focussed on performances which were either performed or exhibited in the gallery space, the performances selected for this study were staged outside the gallery, in 'public' spaces. This thesis explores how Renée Kool’s 'Celebration' (1994), Alicia Framis’s 'Walking Monument' (1997), and the performance project 'The Roof' (2016 - ongoing) by the collective ‘Moha’ engaged with specific spaces and foregrounded a certain group-identity in relation to the spaces in which the performances were staged.
