Abstract
The ageing of the population and the rising costs of professional care challenge the current welfare system. This forces people to take care of themselves and to rely on informal caregivers. Informal caregivers provide unpaid care to sick family members and friends. In 2014, over four million people provided some form of informal care and currently, one out of eight employees combine his or her work with informal care. This influences work-care balance and this has negative consequences for employee wellbeing and ultimately for organizational performance. From the perspective of organizations, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices can be incorporated to help employees that provide informal care. But to this date, it is unclear how this can be incorporated and what solutions can decrease the burden of employed informal care providers. This study builds on organizational design theory, CSR literature and work-care balance theories to come up with new scenarios that alleviate challenges experienced by employed informal care providers. A qualitative study is performed to gain insights in issues and to come up with possible scenarios. The results indicate that multiple scenarios are possible and these include HR-solutions, network solutions and technological options. Practical recommendations and implications of the scenarios are discussed.
