Abstract
Through close reading and analysis an attempt was made in this thesis to gain a deeper understanding of the poetry of the First World War. This was done by analysing the work of nine different poets, each from different social and political backgrounds. These poets were either soldier poets, female poets, or civilian poets, whose work was closely read for examples of political dissent, social criticism, and/or patriotism. This thesis contains analyses of at least 2 or 3 poems per poet, and aimed to focus on slightly lesser known poets of the time. They include; Charles Hamilton Sorley, Arthur Graeme West, Isaac Rosenberg, Ivor Gurney, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, May Wedderburn Cannan, Margaret Postgate Cole and Jessie Pope. By analysing the work of such a diverse group of poets the wartime experience of the majority of people is represented.
