Abstract
Societies today confront an enormous challenge concerning the efficient use of energy in the light of climate change, air pollution, etc. In the last years, numerous studies have been performed on energy-related behaviour, focusing mainly on individual behavioural change. However, energy communities wield far greater influence and decision-making power regarding long-term energy efficiency projects and their outcomes than do ordinary citizens taking individual actions. Hence, from the environmental psychology perspective, this paper responds to the following exploratory question: To what extent do energy community members’ behavioral background factors (contextual and hedonic factors) influence the behavioral intention to engage in efficiency behaviour? Locally, energy communities organize themselves into small cooperatives, having as their goal the adoption of renewable energy technologies such as solar and wind energy technologies, and thus showing great commitment to environmental protection. The research has focused on two Brabant energy communities, namely Energy Community Udenhout and VET Vught, which represent the springboard for future behavioural and environmentally positive changes and therefore it is important to understand their behavioural characteristics and motivational scale.
