Abstract
The present thesis examines the distribution and function of the German linking elements (-s, -es, -ens, -ns, -en, -n, -e) and whether their function influences their predictability, by using the example of the most productive and most occurring linking element – the -s. The linking-s is different from the other elements in terms of its prosodic structure and distribution, equipped and underpinned by other regularities and mechanisms dispersed among the linguistics modules and as such are not yet clearly identifiable. Thus, a couple of different tendencies from the field of phonology, morphology, semantics and syntax exist. The following approach seeks to bring some homogeneity and clear structure to the topic of the linking element’s functions, by way of a synchronic as well as diachronic consideration. Alongside the theoretical component, the paper also includes a practical section based on a randomized trial. Since German native speakers have no difficulties distinguishing when to use a linking element, the study asks 63 German native speakers to make a choice between potential s-interfixes among twelve compounds which are either borderline cases or fictional compounds.
