Abstract
This thesis applies modern theories of memory studies to the ancient era of Augustus. Already in the Roman past memory and commemoration was in the hands of the people in power. Specifically Augustus' use of commemoration of Actium will be discussed. How and why did Augustus influence the memory and history of Actium and his greatest opponent Antony? By analyzing several case studies these questions will be answered.
