Abstract
K-pop (Korean popular music) has grown as a role model for trans-national pop culture in many parts of Asia, and it is now reaching to the Western hemisphere. This paper investigates the portrayal of K-pop in the United States and the United Kingdom. While K-pop fans interact with each other via Facebook or Twitter, the less informed audiences tend to stereotype the Korean popular culture based on the narration of their mass media, for instance within newspapers. This paper specifically looks at the discourse of online newspapers that are published in the US and the UK. To see the perceptual differences between these countries regarding their commentary on K-pop, the US and the UK’s national newspaper articles have been studied by using critical linguistics analysis, discourse analysis, and multimodal discourse. The finding shows that K-pop is received and recognized differently to the US and UK due to their unique political interests and socio-historical settings.
