Abstract
Local and national governments do face challenges as it comes to the development and planning of cities as a result of rapid urbanization processes. As a response to these challenges, various countries develop and have developed new towns which are cities designed from scratch and mostly based on a political decision. Different aspects are important when it comes to the success and failure of new towns but the development of new towns seems to be more about the design and architecture than processes which make these cities lively and successful entities. Therefore in this thesis, the focus in this thesis is not about the design, but about the economic development strategies and the economic development processes of new towns. These aspects are chosen because they play amongst others an important role for the success or failure of new towns. To study economic development strategies and economic development processes, three cases are chosen; Almere (Netherlands), Tema (Ghana) and Songjiang New City (China). Differences between the strategies and economic development processes are analyzed, compared and discussed.
