Abstract
Wit hin a day aft er t he t error at t acks in Beirut and Paris in November 2015, an out cry on social media concerning t he difference in coverage of bot h at t acks commenced. St art ing from t he quest ion whet her t he crit ique voiced in t his out cry was just ified, t his dissert at ion discusses t he power relat ions reflect ed and (re)produced in t he discourses on t he vict ims, wit nesses, and t heir relat ives in t he art icles on t he Beirut and Paris at t acks of November 2015 published in t he Guardian. The Crit ical Discourse Analysis approach of Siegfried Jäger was used t o dist il result s, and Michel Foucault ’s t hought s on power, knowledge, and t he subject t o int erpret t hese result s. Despit e some resist ance point s, t he Guardian oft en classifies t he people of Beirut according t o demographic feat ures, t hereby object ifying t hem, and focuses on t he emot ions of t he people in Paris, t hereby humanising t hem. If unchallenged, t his may negat ively influence t he coverage of ot her t error at t acks, as well as t he discourses and act ions around t errorism, refugees, and foreign policies. This t hesis t hus ident ifies t he need for a change in coverage, moving t o a coverage of bot h t he effect s of at t acks on human lives and of t he cont ext , regardless of t he locat ion where t he at t ack t ook place.
