Abstract
Previous research has supplied the field of psycholinguistics with two important concepts: the competition model (Bates & MacWhinney, 1981) and the concept of crosslinguistic structural priming. The present study aims to examine the possibility of combining these concepts by assessing to what extent the strength of the animacy cue of the competition model could be crosslinguistically primed between the understudied language combination of Dutch and Japanese. Additionally, it was researched whether an influence of L1 on this process was present.
The results showed that agent assignment was influenced by the animacy of nouns present in the sentences, and that the strength of the cue of animacy was primed from Japanese to Dutch: participants were more likely to denote the animate noun as agent in Dutch sentences, even when this was in conflict with other cues, when they were first presented with a Japanese sentence in which the same conflict occurred.
