Abstract
In this Master’s thesis, I research what the trajectory of displacement might look like for Colombians who have been forced out of their homes. Although the armed conflict in Colombia officially ended with the peace accord of 2016, its consequences are still tangible for many Colombians, many of whom are unable to return back home after forced internal displacement. While they are relatively safe from conflict-related violence in their host cities, many have to deal with a whole new form of unsafety: after they become displaced, they often live in conditions of extreme poverty, and face such racism and discrimination every day that it is virtually impossible to get out of that situation by themselves. Their new homes, often in shacks in the slums of Colombia’s biggest cities, never truly feel like home to them. This way, those displaced by Colombia’s decade-long conflict remain ‘perdidas’ (lost), even after they’ve fled.
My data collection included observations in Colombia, an extensive interview with a Colombian IDP, as well as literature- and media study. Based on these findings, I wrote my thesis in the form of a novel (scientific fiction). Throughout the novel, I refer to the information and data—collected with the aforementioned methods—in footnotes. The footnotes are meant to substantiate passages in the story with data, or to explain what a certain passage is inspired or based on.
