Abstract
Epicurus’ hedonist moral philosophy has often been criticised as being irreconcilable with essential aspects of social and political life, such as justice and genuine social relationships. Contemporary philosophers have increasingly explored and considered Epicurus’ views on society and societal life. In this thesis I will provide an outline of Epicurus’ social and political philosophy and discuss its relation with his moral philosophy. Epicurus’ understanding of the development of society, the role and function of societal institutions and of social relationships will be considered in relation to his moral philosophy.
