Abstract
The supply chain is perceived to have a big impact on social and environmental problems. Pressured by the presented issues hovering over humanity nowadays and the perceived impact of the supply chain on society, economy and environment, more and more attention is being put on sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). A holistic view on sustainability in supply chains in combination with exploring existing frameworks to gain a better understanding of how SSCM should be shaped to enable value creation in the supply chain is the main challenge ahead. The dynamic capabilities (DCs) approach is potentially insightful in the role of SSCM enabling value creation in the supply chain. The aim of this research therefore is to create insight into how DCs of a company contribute to SSCM in enabling value creation in the supply chain. As methodological approach it was chosen to conduct a single-case study within Vattenfall and their SSCM of goods and services. Documents have been analyzed, observations were done, and Presentation & Discussion meetings were conducted with a variety of people within the company. The findings show that DCs in a company contribute to SSCM in enabling value creation in the supply chain, embedded in an interrelated web and based on the sustainable business strategy. Moreover, the reflection on this process leads to a feedback loop and possible changes in the sustainable business strategy towards a more effective and efficient basis of DCs in SSCM. All of this is consolidated in a comprehensive research framework providing insight in the differing processes and interlinkages, accompanied by the identification of influencing factors on the variety of DCs in SSCM. Theoretically speaking, the results of this study gave more insight into the exact workings of DCs in SSCM and thus add to both streams of research. Practical implications are that DCs in SSCM are important to critically reflect on and identify, to stimulate effectively and efficiently enabling of value creation in the supply chain.
