Abstract
Manufacturers face many barriers in the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies. Many of the issues that they face revolve around the lack of appropriate knowledge regarding the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies. However, adoption of these technologies is crucial for manufacturers in terms of future competitiveness. The necessary knowledge that is lacking could be obtained via more open innovation. Through open innovation’s ability to mobilize knowledge in- and outflows for the organization, the knowledge barriers could be overcome. Further, it has been investigated whether market partnerships are more important than science partnerships in this regard, as different types of partnerships allow access to different knowledge content. Based on a Dutch sub-sample of the European Manufacturing Survey (EMS), with hep of multiple regression analysis, support for open innovation’s positive association with Industry 4.0 technology adoption has been found. No evidence in support of a differential effect of the type of partnership has been found.
