Abstract
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, lots of organizations and institutions were forced to use online communication platforms like Zoom and WebEx. The use of video calls in order to communicate with each other will maintain for at least the medium term, but in many context most likely for a longer period. In a video call, you can see the other participants in the so-called “video grid”. This study investigates the effect of vertically elevated position in a video call (grid) on personal sense of power and ultimately the participant’ creativity. Personal sense of power has been measured by one construct (PSOP). Creativity has been measured by two constructs, a self-reported construct of creativity (SRC) and an objectively rated construct of creativity (ORC). The results indicated that a vertically elevated position did result in more personal sense of power and, and in an betters score on self-reported creativity (which mainly tells how creative a participant felt), but it did not seem to have much effect on objectively rated creativity (which tells how creative a participant actually was). Besides that, PSOP did show a significant effect on SRC, but PSOP did not show a significant effect on ORC. Based on these outcomes there could be argued, that a vertically elevated position in a video call could results in an increased personal sense of power. Furthermore, personal sense of power (caused by a vertically elevated position) has a significant influence on how creative a participant feels (SRC), but not a significant influence on how creative a participant actually is (ORC).
