Abstract
This research investigates the effect of challenge stressors and hindrance stressors, due to the COVID-19 crisis and working remotely, on the way employees are involved in their social networks and how this in turn affects employees’ innovative behavior. In order to investigate these effects, a survey was conducted within the Dutch branch of an international software company. The analyses showed that the experience of challenge stressors as well as hindrance stressors leads to employees behaving less innovatively. The analyses also showed that challenge stressors and hindrance stressors are moderately present in the work remote setting. The experience of challenge and/or hindrance stressors increases the involvement in weak social tie relationships and decreases the involvement in strong social tie relationships. The effect of challenge stressors and hindrance stressors on employees’ innovative behavior is negatively mediated by weak social tie relationships. Indicating that a person experiencing hindrance and/or challenge stressors is more likely to be involved in weak social ties which negatively affects that person’s innovative behavior. It was also found that the experience of organizational support has a positive effect on employees’ innovative behavior. These results emphasize the importance of managerial practices when it comes to employees’ innovative behavior.
