The path towards regeneration – Analysing strategies for transforming Uganda’s agricultural system

Abstract
The transformation towards regenerative agriculture (RA) can be a solution to the difficult situation of smallholder farmers in Uganda. However, there are four barriers to advance it which were previously researched by Isgren (2016): at the farmer’s level, on the agricultural knowledge system, in the political economy, and, discursive/ideological dimensions. In this thesis, those are identified with the barriers to transformative change (TC). Using the case of Uganda, seven existing strategies to advance RA and their relationship with those barriers are analyzed. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, a WhatsApp group observation, and online research. The strategies included: education, research, pilot projects, collective action, policy advocacy, publicity, and breaking financial dependencies. Those are impacted by the four still existing barriers. Especially, the agricultural knowledge system and political economy barrier impact the strategies. Those two were also challenging to address, however, breaking financial dependencies and policy advocacy seemed to be crucial for this. Strategies had transformative potential on the farmers’ level. The impact of the discursive/ideological barrier was debated and it was indirectly addressed. Generally, strategies need to be combined, precise, and collectively applied. My research shows the interconnection of TC and RA, portraying that RA is beneficial in bringing TC.
