Abstract
The pressure on the planning system in the Netherlands continuously increases. Especially urban areas face difficulties because of the high density population and scarcity of space. On top of that, additional space claiming functions for sustainability issues are becoming more common. Scarcity is an undeniable phenomenon in these areas and regarding sustainability cities not only experience much consequences, but also have a strong influence on climate change. Hence, they play an important role. Cities have to become more compact and a way to do this and cope with these issues is to focus on multifunctional land use. By combining different functions and planning this more efficiently, problems as mentioned above could be resolved. This study investigates what factors are relevant in the process of realizing multifunctional land use. It analyses relevant factors like boundary actions, forms of stakeholder involvement, influence of capacity of municipalities and economical and technical factors. The analysis clearly showcases the relevance of strategic strong use of boundary actions. Also an integral policy and clear goals on municipal scale level deemed important. The transparency of relevant factors help to focus on the right factors, and hence contribute to the implementation.
