Abstract
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic there has been an increased number of worldwide reports about racism against people of Chinese and East-Asian descent, varying from visible avoidance to aggressive behaviour such as verbal abuse and violence. This thesis is designed to get a better understanding of how COVID-19-related acts of racism affect people of Chinese descent living in the Netherlands. Furthermore, this thesis aims to document and observe the acts of perceived racism against people of Chinese descent in the Netherlands, in order to get a better understanding of its impact and social consequences.
To achieve the research objectives, components of critical race theory are investigated that give insights in the ways in which systemic racism and Sinophobia are present in Dutch society. Furthermore, eleven in-depth interviews with Dutch people of Chinese descent were carried out to analyse experienced acts of racism prior and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Important findings based on the theoretical framework and fieldwork of this research show that the outbreak of the virus promoted and amplified already existing systemic racism against people of Chinese descent in the Netherlands. In addition, findings of the research made clear that since the outbreak of COVID-19, the number of perceived racist acts and attitudes has significantly increased.
