Abstract
The Master thesis ‘Conflict in the Mollucans: merely religious?’ focusses on identity dynamics in the Mollucan conflict. This conflict took place in the context of democratization in Indonesia, and was often framed as religious. This master thesis focusses on different aspects of identity dynamics throughout the conflict. A distinction is made between pre-conflict, conflict and post-conflict. In these three distinct phases the common discourse is explained through the common identities that were dominant at the time. Through qualitative matters, using several key interviews, this framework is established. Most of the interviews are conducted in Bahasa Indonesia, the Indonesian language. These interviews are conducted with former victims, child soldiers, academics and people involved in the process of reconciliation. The interviews give a clear image of how the identity discourses shifted throughout the conflict. This master thesis shows that identity aspects and constructions are highly complex and are dependent on local, national and international context and developments.
