An implicit learning model of cross-language structural priming in sentence production

Abstract
We implemented a Spanish-English and a Dutch-English model of sentence production to investigate whether error-based implicit learning can provide an account of cross-language structural priming. The models are based on the Dual-path model of sentence-production (Chang, 2002). We implemented our model using the Bilingual version of Dual-path (Tsoukala et al., 2017). We first performed an experiment to answer two main questions: (1) Can structural priming of active and passive constructions occur between English and Spanish in a bilingual version of the Dual-path model? (2) Does cross-language priming dif- fer quantitatively from within-language priming in this model? We then performed an experiment to investigate whether structural priming in the model depends on identical constituent order. To this end, we answered the following main question: Can structural priming of passive constructions occur between Dutch and English in the model, even when the passives in Dutch have a different constituent order from those in English? The results of the first experiment show that cross-language priming did occur in the model. Furthermore, we found that the within-language priming effect is somewhat stronger than the cross-language effect. The results of the second experiment reveal a reverse priming effect for passives in Dutch and English, which had different word order in those languages. Our finding of cross-language structural priming in the Dual-path model provides evidence for the viability of implicit learning as an account of cross-language structural priming. In turn, our finding provides support for the implicit learning model implemented in Dual-path, as an account of structural priming in general.
