Abstract
The construction industry is confronted with challenges that need multidisciplinary project teams to address via knowledge creation. Knowledge creation processes are critical for multidisciplinary construction project teams to achieve a competitive advantage and meet corporate objectives. The created conceptual model, shown below, is used in this research to investigate how these teams and their structure affect knowledge creation processes.
The effects of Strubler and York's (2007) model on Fong's (2003) model were investigated deductively in this research. To that purpose, fifteen semi-structured interviews across three case studies were undertaken.
All of the team characteristics described by Strubler and York (2007) seem to have a favorable impact on at least two knowledge creation processes. It was discovered that the team characteristics of autonomy, variety of skills, task identity, and task significance had a beneficial influence on boundary-crossing. The characteristics of autonomy, skill variety, and task identity seem to favorably affect knowledge sharing. It has been determined that a variety of skills, task identity, autonomy, and feedback favorably affect knowledge generation, and that skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedback positively promote knowledge integration. Finally, it has been discovered that the characteristics of skill variety, task identity, feedback, and autonomy have a favorable influence on collective project learning.
