Abstract

This research gives an insight in the awareness of waste, in this research defined as knowledge and attitude, and next to awareness an insight in the behavior towards waste of students in Semarang, Indonesia by answering the following research question: To what extend does environmental education play a role in raising student’s awareness of waste and their behavior towards waste issues in Semarang, and how can the behavior towards waste of students subsequently be explained? A quantitative survey concludes that there is a discrepancy between awareness of waste and behavior towards waste. Qualitative interviews reveal the two reasons the discrepancy appears. Firstly, the role of environmental and waste education works differently for creating awareness than it does for changing behavior. That is because the lack of practicality results in the education not reaching students to the point where they change their behavior. Secondly, the context that influences the relationship between awareness of waste and behavior towards waste exists of a lot of factors next to environmental education. This large context overrides the influence of awareness on behavior. These factors next to environmental are the working of the waste system, students’ social environment, the Javanese culture and law enforcements.
