Abstract
Although deepfake technology is a relatively new term in the online world, it is advancing rapidly. Distinguishing between authentic and deepfake content is becoming increasingly difficult. This study examines the factors that affect a person’s ability to detect deepfake images, specifically in news-related posts on Instagram. Four hypotheses were developed, predicting that age, education level, Instagram experience, and the presence of a blue verification checkmark influence detection ability. A sample of 114 participants was shown ten images and asked to rate them on 5-point Likert scales based on how likely they were deepfake or authentic. Results showed that age is the only factor that partially affects detection ability, with young adults performing better than middle-aged and senior participants. However, education level, Instagram experience, and the blue checkmark did not significantly impact detection. These findings contrast previous studies, highlighting opportunities for future research to further explore deepfake detection across demographics.
