Abstract

This study examined whether LaxVox resonance tube therapy reduced residual nasality in children with at least a cleft palate beyond standard speech therapy and assessed the reliability of the Dutch CAPS-A tool. Thirteen children provided pre- and post-treatment speech samples, which were then evaluated by both speech therapists specialized in cleft speech and regular speech therapists. The non-specialized speech therapists participated in an online experiment to select preferred samples based on nasality, while specialists used the Dutch CAPS-A to assess specific speech features. Results showed a marginal preference for post-treatment samples, though the effect was non-significant. A notable bias toward the last-heard sample was observed. The Dutch CAPS-A demonstrated high reliability in assessments, except for hyponasality. Further research is recommended to validate the clinical impact of LaxVox on nasality.
