Abstract

This thesis conducts a qualitative study on African international students' transboundary experiences amid the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, scrutinizing racialized encounters and European double standards in migration, influenced by post-colonial thinking and Eurocentrism. Unlike typical migratory studies focused on African migrants, this research centers on these students as distinct from conventional refugees, emphasizing their investment in Ukrainian education and their often marginalized voices in Western discourse. Through semi-structured interviews and participatory observations, the study uncovers the nuanced experiences of this underrepresented group, confronting unique global and personal challenges in a foreign conflict zone. It critically analyzes the complex dynamics at play, including the dual standards of European policies towards migrants of color. The findings offer insights for NGOs, the German government, and universities to enhance awareness and develop culturally sensitive approaches to better support and address discrimination against these individuals.
