Abstract

Women often feel fear of sexual street harassment in urban public space. This has an influence on their lives. That is why this research aims to improve the situation of women in urban public space and tries to contribute to the discussion on sexual street harassment worldwide. To be able to do so, this research investigates how the physical and social features of urban public space contribute to the fear of young women of sexual street harassment in the city centre of Nijmegen. This research uses Lefebvre’s theory the Production of space. The features of the environment are categorised under the spaces of Lefebvre. This research is qualitative and makes use of emotional maps and six semi-structured interviews. The interviews are coded and analysed with the programme Atlas.ti. The results show, that all physical and social features listed in this research influence young women’s fear of sexual street harassment. There are multiple connections between the physical and social features of the environment. This research concluded that it is the influence of Lefebvre’s spaces on each other and the influence of the physical and social features within the spaces that make young women feel fear of sexual street harassment.
