Abstract
Integration is used to investigate how immigrants become part of society. How people perceive society is key in order to define immigrant integration. This research therefore gives an in-depth view on how several social elements within society play their part regarding the integration of immigrants. Social relations seem to be key when looking at immigrant integration. This research investigates the relationship between immigrant integration and local communities.
Local communities seem to play a big role in immigrant integration. This research shows a mixed-methods approach trough qualitative and quantitative research design.
The results shows that social relations and Dutch values and beliefs are important to non-immigrants within local communities. Learning the Dutch language are key factors to non-immigrants regarding immigrant integration. Also, social factors seem to play a high role regarding integration. Local communities find that the Dutch government should consider to include the social networks that are key to integrate into a neighborhood. Furthermore, non-immigrants believe that immigrants enrich our understanding of culture. Most non-immigrants find that it is important for locals to be open-minded towards immigrants, but that non-immigrants and local communities are not responsible.
