Abstract

This thesis investigates how contrasting refugee policies of Uganda and Bangladesh, influence the impact of mass refugee influx for host communities. Adopting a host-centered approach, economic, socio-cultural and environmental impact of refugee influx on host communities are analyzed. Using document analysis, the thesis compares the Ugandan generous policy with Bangladeshi’s restrictive policy, and how these policies shape the consequences for host communities. Findings show that Uganda’s generous policy distributes both the benefits and burdens of refugee influx more evenly among the host community. The restrictive approach of Bangladesh results in more negative consequences within one district, especially in terms of environmental and economic impact. These results show that refugee policy plays a significant role in shaping the impact of mass refugee influx on host communities. However, neither the Ugandan nor the Bangladeshi model appears to be sustainable for the long term. This thesis contributes to the societal and scientific debate about refugee policy, by linking policy choices to their impact on host communities.
