Abstract

The majority of Dutch primary school pupils walk or cycle to their school every day (CROW, 2016). However, there is also a group of children who are structurally taken to school by car (Lankhuijzen & Lax, 2014; CROW, 2016). Motorised vehicles in the immediate vicinity of the school, the school zone, cause road safety problems (CROW, 2016; Van den Berg et al., 2020; Bina et al., 2021). During peak times, in the morning and in the afternoon, several road users converge in the school zone, which regularly leads to chaotic and complex traffic situations. To tackle this problem, it is necessary that there is good cooperation between the different stakeholders. This research therefore aims to explore and discover how stakeholders can successfully improve active mobility and road safety in Dutch primary school zones. The main research question is: How do stakeholders successfully, collaboratively improve active mobility and road safety in Dutch primary school zones? The data was collected through interviews, surveys and observations. The research shows that several factors influence the success of the collaboration, namely: the number of stakeholders, the variety of positions and roles, the way of communication and the amount of influence on decisions and shared enthusiasm.
