Abstract

This thesis investigates the concept of frames as developed in Judith Butler’s Frames of War in relation to the visibility of conflict- related sexual violence. Butler’s framework offers a valuable analytical tool for understanding how such violence becomes perceptible. I examine the theoretical principles of her concept of frames and apply it to two specific frames: hypervisibility and underrepresentation. I argue that both can be understood as epistemic frames that render different aspects of conflict-related sexual violence invisible. Ultimately, I demonstrate that Butler’s theory on frames enables a critical analysis of this structural invisibility. One that can be used to better our understanding of conflict-related sexual violence and even contribute to a re-evaluation of how war is assessed.
