Abstract

The thesis studies the construction, communication and reception of authenticity in the Pueblos Mágicos program. It analyses 5 different towns in the state of Jalisco: Mazamitla, Talpa de Allende, Tapalpa, Tlaquepaque and San Sebastian de Allende. Contrary to past studies about the Pueblos Mágicos, this thesis focuses on constructive and existential authenticity rather than objective authenticity. The thesis is divided into three parts: a multimodal analysis of websites of the Pueblos Magicos program, an analysis of interviews with the tourism boards of the five towns and an analysis of interviews with visitors. Contrary to earlier scholarship which dismisses the program as inauthentic, the thesis shows that in the minds of the tourism boards as well as the visitors, the towns are seen as particularly authentic. This is also the way that the idea of authenticity is communicated through the websites, although some are more effective in achieving that effect that others.
