Abstract

The objective of this study was to explore the consumer experiences that patients have when using an mHealth app for their chronic disease management. Moreover, it aims to do this by exploring if patients experience paradoxes while using their mHealth app and if these paradoxes led to certain coping strategies. This study followed an abductive approach through qualitative research by conducting in-depth interviews. A sample of thirteen respondents who use an mHealth app for managing their chronic disease has been recruited. After the data analysis, five experienced paradoxes have been observed. These five paradoxes are “Mental rest vs. mental stress”, “Knowledge vs. confrontation”, “Freedom vs. enslavement”, “Integration vs. disintegration”, and “Confirmation vs. disconfirmation”. These paradoxes all consist of a positive and a negative side. To deal with these paradoxes, five different coping strategies have been observed that patients can use. The five observed coping strategies are: adjusting, accepting, abandonment, neglecting, and to replace the app with feelings. Through observing these paradoxes and coping strategies, this thesis gives an insight into the contradictory experiences of patients who use an mHealth app for managing their chronic disease.
