Abstract
Background: With a depression relapse rate of about 85% ten years after the end of treatment, it is crucial to examine factors that could predict depression relapse which could identify high-risk individuals. The current study focused on short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) and potential predictors of depression relapse at follow-up. Based on previous research and psychodynamic theory, this study investigated if previous depressive episodes, post-treatment residual depressive symptoms, STPP mode supportive vs. expressive, STPP mode emotion-focused vs. interpretative, and interpersonal problems are predictors of depression relapse in adults after STPP.
Methods An individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis was conducted, using an existing IPD database of STPP including N = 133 participants. A logistic regression analysis was performed for each predictor separately, as the study sample differed based on the measurements used in the original study. The outcome variable was relapse at follow-up.
Results The relapse rate in the current sample was 20.3%. The results did not show that any of the predictors were associated with depression relapse at follow-up. However, the predictor interpersonal problems could not be investigated due to a 100% remission rate at follow-up in the study sample.
Discussion. The findings suggest that the predictors of depression relapse after STPP might differ from other psychotherapies. However, the results of the study may have been influenced by attrition bias. Future research on the long-term effects of STPP on depression is needed to aid in finding depression relapse predictors.
