Abstract
Theories of political pluralism often focus upon the presence of diverse cultural identities and their distinct values within a single society. Charles Taylor’s theory of multiculturalism is a prime example. Taylor asserts, as an anthropological fact, that cultural identities play a constitutive role in shaping our moral agency. His theory of multiculturalism attempts to accommodate this role, which has led to several critiques. I will assess whether the shortcomings these critiques identified can be addressed by Herman Dooyeweerd’s approach of sphere-sovereignty. The latter is a cosmological principle which expresses Creation’s irreducible plurality, encompassed within various modes of existence. For Dooyeweerd, this plurality should become correlative to an institutional pluralism, which can subsequently promote human flourishing.
