Abstract

The aim of this research is threefold. At first, it tries to distinguish a set of comprehensive policy measures which tackle both radicalism and terrorism with regards to the European foreign fighter problem. Different radicalization models are discussed, each theorizing a path towards radicalization. Theories regarding the radicalization process will be used to develop theory-based policy measures. The second aim of this thesis is putting four distinctive European strategies, being the Dutch, English, German and Belgian, to the test. It is looked upon whether or not they incorporate the comprehensive set of policy measures. The entire study is related to the European call for more cooperation in the fields of counter-radicalism and counter-terrorism. At last it is aimed to question enactors of the strategy ‘on the ground’ whether they believe the carried out strategy works in order to provide a practicality test.
