Abstract

This Master’s thesis examines high school students' perception of developing countries and whether this perception can be challenged. The current perception that is being reproduced is limited and creates a negative representation. Based on the conducted surveys, mapping exercises, and participant observations, this thesis demonstrates that the negative image is highly present in the high school student population. The students used the western notion of development to value the “developing countries.” Based on this western notion of development and the process of othering, the students felt the need to secure themselves from developing countries. This was done through the negative image, and they created a perceived greater distance to developing countries than geographically accurate. Due to these processes, the CYB project (setting) could not challenge this limited and negative image. This negative image was too deeply rooted for the CYB project (setting) to change this perception. Nevertheless, this research has shown the influence of high school education on the perception of its students and created a possibility for future research into challenging the current perception of developing countries.
