Abstract
“This thesis attempts to analyze how the political culture of an electorate across post-authoritarian competitive authoritarianism affects regime turnover via elections. The study hy-pothesizes that the undemocratic political culture of an electorate across the post-authoritarian competitive authoritarianism is negatively and significantly related to incumbent turnover through elections. To test the hypothesis, a sample of 54 national elections across post-authoritarian competitive authoritarian regimes is drawn. The relationship between the political culture of an electorate and incumbent turnover is analyzed employing a binary logistic regres-sion. The analysis generates two main inferences. First, this paper fails to provide enough sup-port for the argument that the political culture of an electorate in post-authoritarian competitive authoritarianism is a significant predictor of incumbent turnover via elections. Second, the analysis finds that it is rather two other factors that best determine incumbent turnover through elections. These are related to the freedom and fairness of elections, as well as regime capacity. The latter is best understood as the government’s capacity to abuse democratic practices in the pursuit of greater dominance vis-à-vis the opposition”.
