Abstract
The present study investigated whether a supplementary instalment, combining different appeals
and information, could decrease visitor non-compliance in relation to seasonal closures. This
question was addressed through an applied study in the Black Forest National Park in southern
Germany. An intervention was designed, based on the theory of planned behaviour, a value
based-choice-model, and previous studies in other national parks around the world. A signpost
was installed in front of a closure, targeting the evaluation of alternative routes, the overall
attitude towards the closure, and injunctive norm through appeals and additional information.
Results indicate that the intervention was successful in decreasing visitor non-compliance in
regards to the seasonal closure, effectively reducing the relative amount of visitors entering the
closure. Relevance, limitations of the study, and implications for future research are discussed.
