Abstract

Depression is a debilitating disorder experienced by over 300 million people worldwide. Psychotherapy and medication are both efficacious treatments for depression. Most patients prefer psychotherapy such as short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP). A problem STPP faces is that individuals often drop out of treatment, leaving their depression untreated, possibly causing further difficulties. Preliminary evidence exists on which factors contribute to the occurrence of drop-out in general psychotherapy. For STPP as depression treatment these factors are unknown whilst it is a frequently used treatment. Therefore, the aim of this study is to research which predictors are associated with drop-out. Using individual participant data (IPD), several simple logistic regressions were conducted. Education level, quality of life and interpersonal problems significantly predicted drop-out in STPP. However, when modelled simultaneously, education level remained significant. Further research should focus on replication of these results and the possible influence of other predicting variables within patient personality characteristics such as motivation or more complex characteristics such as therapeutic alliance.
