Abstract

The Dutch healthcare sector faces several challenges due to an expanding and ageing population and shortage of healthcare staff. There is a need for the reorganization of healthcare services to shift towards more collaborative forms of providing care. The community as an organizational form seems to have characteristics fit for tackling societal challenges. However, contain the risk of being temporary in nature. This evokes the need to consider the development of communities. Although the development of collaborations can be challenging, an orchestrator appears to be useful in this process. So far, the influence of an orchestrator and its activities have been studied in the context of network development. However, it remains unclear how an orchestrator influences community development. This study aimed to explore the influence of an orchestrator on community development by assessing which activities have been undertaken and investigating their influence on development. To do so, semi-structured interviews were carried out with respondents being part of a single community. The data analysis revealed that the orchestrator’s activities contributed to the development community in several ways. In addition, two challenges were identified concerning the role of the orchestrator. These findings add to the small body of research concerning the influence of an orchestrator on community development. Further research should be conducted to broaden the understanding of the orchestrator's influence and its activities on community development.
