Abstract

This thesis examines the role of the Sudanese Islamist movement in the December Revolution, the transitional period, and the ‘new Sudan’. The December Revolution, followed by the current transitional process, started in December 2018 and marked an end to Omar al-Bashir’s military Islamist regime. His Inqaz-regime was created after the military coup of 1989 which emerged from an alliance between al-Bashir and his officers, and the Islamists led by Hassan al-Turabi. This thesis’ first section elaborates on the December Revolution and puts it into the Sudanese context. Then, a critical analysis of Islamism is provided, with a particular focus on the relationship between Islamism and politics. Drawing on the political philosophy of Michael Walzer, the Islamist conception of politics will be explained. In the light of the theoretical chapter, the history and development of the Sudanese Islamist movement will then be discussed. It will for instance be shown how deep state structures, which are still inhibiting the transitional process, are established by the Islamists years before the Inqaz-regime. In the core part of this thesis, the empirical analysis distinguishes between Islamists within the Inqaz-regime and Islamists outside of the Inqaz- regime. Regarding the latter, four different indicators are used, each covering a different feature of the main research question. These indicators will respectively be looking into the attitude towards the civil protests and the transitional process, ideology, position on democracy, and cooperation and alliances. To conclude this thesis, two opposite perspectives will be presented to approach the role of the Sudanese Islamist movement during the December Revolution and the subsequent period. These will be a perspective of accommodation and a perspective of antagonism.
