Abstract

Several studies constituted the factors that enhance the probability of substance use in later life, such as social deviance or peer influences. However, there is just limited empirical evidence for the role of parental investment and its consequences in this domain. The goal of the present study is to examine the relationship between parental investment and substance use and the role of inhibitory control in it as a mediating component. It is hypothesized that the link between an impaired parental investment and substance use runs via lower levels of inhibitory control. This study is based on secondary data from the United States (N = 933). Measurements took place between age 11 and 27 years. To analyze the current mediation model, the SPSS-macro ‘PROCESS’ by Simon Hayes was used. The results showed a significant negative relationship between parental investment on substance use which is, further, mediated by inhibitory control. In conclusion, this study supports empirical evidence for the relation between impairments in parental investment and a heightened probability for substance use in later life, runs via lower levels of inhibitory control.
