Abstract

This research explores the experiences of seven female Syrian refugees who fled to the Netherlands during the civil war in their homeland and how they experience their new life. The main research question is: “To what extent are Syrian women part of the socio-cultural integration process in The Netherlands and how do they understand their new life?”. This study attempts to give the chance to those women to share their stories regarding their participation in the new society and the challenges they face in adapting. In order to achieve that, this study uses concepts such as integration process, feminist and gender geography, transnationalism and social networks to address the main question as well. The used methods of this research are mainly semi-structured interviews and review of the literature. The findings show the adjustments these women have faced upon their arrival in the Netherlands where an active role in the socio-cultural integration is required in order to participate at social activities, build a social network, learn the language, and be part of the labour market. However, despite their efforts, the study shows that not all women have achieved the desired level of integration into their new society.
