Abstract
This thesis examines the role of social media use in the development of trust or distrust in three major political institutions of the European Union. While existing research suggests that social media use negatively impacts trust in the EU, that research uses data from 2012 and 2019. Based on other research, the suspicion arises that this effect might no longer be prevalent. The relevance of this thesis therefore lies in investigating this effect with data from a Eurobarometer conducted in 2023. This study applies a logistic multilevel model to the Eurobarometer data. When interpreting the results it becomes clear that social media use does not impact trust in the political institutions of the European Union at all. This result holds as well when people specifically looking for information on the EU when using social media.
