Abstract

The following study focuses on accommodation of directness in job interviews and aims to explore how the candidate’s convergence to the directness of the interviewer influences the evaluation of the candidate in a job interview as well as whether high and low context cultures perceive this convergence similarly. Results indicate that high and low context cultures similarly appreciate convergence to or maintenance of a direct- and indirect communication style in a job interview. Converging candidates are more likely to be perceived as more competent and hireable. Therefore, job interview candidates are advised to converge to the (in)direct communication style of the interviewer, regardless of cultural affiliation.
